Protests signed so far:
Ask the Romanian government to stop the live transport of 500,000 milk cows to China
An export memorandum between Romania and China has sentenced more than 500,000 cows to a terrible fate. From January 2014, more than half a million dairy cows will be shipped on a month-long journey from Romania to China in terrible conditions. The cows that survive the journey may end up in indoor intensive keeping systems.
Long distance transport can cause huge suffering to animals due to restricted movement and lack of enrichment. Injuries and fatalities often occur as a result. The scale of this animal suffering is huge when we consider that over 500,000 cows will be shipped to China. The Romanian Government has a duty to prevent animal suffering by stopping this memorandum. China should look to source dairy cows closer to home.
The Chinese and Central Eastern European Prime Ministers are meeting this week in Bucharest in a summit that will address this memorandum.
Please appeal to the Romanian Prime Minister and Government to stop this memorandum and save these dairy cows from the traumatic journey that leads to a life to suffering.
The Romanian Government
In attention of:
Prime Minister Victor PONTA
Dear Mr. Ponta
Shipping half a million milk cows of the "Romanian Baltata" breed might make some money for Romania, however you have to look at the bigger picture and think about why other European countries do not choose to export their cows. The live animal transport issue is a huge animal welfare topic in Europe when it comes to journeys lasting longer than 8 hours. The European Commission is working on tight regulations to solve this issue. In this case we are talking about months of sailing and a 15,000 km journey to China. This is quite ridiculous and will affect your country’s reputation. The suffering of the animals will be enormous and tragic incidents will undoubtedly occur.
You should also know that besides long distance live animal transport, which remains the highest animal welfare problem, I am also concerned about the animals future lives in what will effectively be a prison. While in Romania many farmers allow cows to enjoy the rich meadows, however the main farming system in China is based indoors where super-intensive raising systems with a lack of exercise and poor diet will force milk production up from an average of 10 litres / day (Romania) to 30-32 litres / day (China).
I am writing to you to ask you to quickly reflect on the situation and consider a U-turn. Tell the Chinese investors to source their cows from their surrounding countries and call off this unethical deal.
Let the Romanian Baltata enjoy their home country. Stop the export.
