Join FOUR PAWS in campaigning against the puppy trade
The puppy farming business is booming: countless dogs are being shipped over from Ireland. Often these puppies are transported in filthy and inadequate conditions by these ruthless traders. Puppy farms are most common in Wales and Ireland, the puppies they produce are then sold to some pet shops across the UK or can be advertised through the internet or newspaper adverts.
As part of our campaign against the puppy trade please support FOUR PAWS’ petition calling for the compulsory micro chipping of puppies and tightening of dog breeding legislation.
We are calling on the UK Government to introduce legislation to make it compulsory for all puppies to be micro-chipped.
Petition for the compulsory micro-chipping and registration of puppies
There is growing concern regarding the welfare of breeding bitches and puppies at so-called “puppy farms”. In some cases, puppies may suffer physical and/or behavioural problems, stress, illness and even death due to lack of vaccinations, poor breeding, inadequate socialisation and poor standards of handling, care, housing and transportation.
The Control of Dogs Order 1992 requires owners to ensure their dog wears a collar and tag displaying their name and address when in public. It is time this requirement was brought into the 21st Century and replaced with a requirement to permanently identify dogs by micro-chipping and to register.
Compulsory micro-chipping and registration before the first change of ownership would ensure that puppies can be traced to the establishment where they were bred. Such legislation would also have the benefit of making it much easier for stray dogs to be reunited with their owner.
We, the undersigned, call on the UK Government to introduce legislation to make it compulsory for all puppies born, sold or offered for sale in the UK to be micro-chipped prior to the first change of ownership and registered.
